Somaliland Education Minister Vows Action After Students Charged to Access Exam Results

Hargeisa (WDN) – Somaliland’s Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Ismaaciil Ducaale Yuusuf, has expressed disappointment over students being charged to access the results of this year’s national examinations, saying the fees overshadowed what should have been a moment of celebration.

The minister said many students and parents were unable to access the online results after Telesom’s Aqoonmaal service reportedly required a payment of $0.40 to view individual examination results. “We are disappointed that, on a day when we should have been celebrating with our students, many parents and students were unable to access their examination results because of the charge,” the minister said.

Prof. Ismaaciil pledged that the ministry would investigate the matter and hold accountable anyone responsible for imposing the fee. He said students should not have been required to pay simply to receive the results of examinations they had worked hard to complete.

The minister also announced alternative arrangements to ensure that students can obtain their results without relying on Telesom’s paid service. Results have been made available through examination offices in Somaliland’s regions and districts, where students can check their scores directly. Schools have also been provided with the results.

The controversy comes as thousands of Somaliland students receive their national examination results—a milestone that was expected to be marked with pride and celebration.

Despite the dispute over the online access fee, the ministry’s alternative arrangements are intended to ensure that every student can receive the results they have earned without financial barriers standing between them and this important moment.
