Mogadishu (WDN) – Somalia’s opposition Future Council has called on regional leaders meeting in Uganda to support the creation of a transitional governing authority, arguing that the country’s federal institutions have lost their political legitimacy and that the current leadership has failed to pursue an inclusive political settlement.

In a formal letter addressed to the heads of state of countries contributing troops to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), whose leaders are meeting in Kampala, the opposition coalition contended that Somalia’s political crisis has reached a critical stage.

According to the Future Council, the Federal Government has lost the legitimacy that was originally founded on political consensus and has rejected efforts to reach a broad-based national agreement on the country’s constitutional and electoral future.

The opposition coalition argued that restoring constitutional order requires the establishment of a Transitional National Council that would temporarily assume responsibility for guiding the country through the current political impasse.

Under the proposal outlined in the letter, the transitional body would be created through an inclusive political agreement involving all major Somali stakeholders. The council would oversee the constitutional review process, manage preparations for national elections, and supervise the rebuilding of legitimate state institutions.
