Jigjiga (WDN) — A coalition of concerned citizens from the Somali diaspora, representing the Fafan and Wardheer regions, has issued a scathing statement accusing the Somali Regional Government (DDS) of deliberate inaction and neglect amid ongoing attacks by Oromo militias in the Tuli Guuleed district.
The joint statement, released on June 9th, paints a grim picture of escalating violence, targeted killings, and mass displacement, all unfolding under the watch of DDS authorities who have, so far, refused to intervene.
“We are witnessing organized ambushes, homes being set on fire, livestock looted, and civilians slaughtered in cold blood,” the statement reads. “People live in constant fear, forced to flee their homes while the regional leadership remains disturbingly silent.”
According to the diaspora group, the DDS government has repeatedly failed to act despite multiple opportunities to address the violence, allowing Oromo militias operating along the border to target Somali communities with impunity.
“The government’s silence and apathy are not accidental — they are enabling these atrocities,” said Najib, spokesperson for the diaspora association. “This is state-sanctioned negligence. Injustice and silence only create new wounds.”.
The group issued several urgent demands to the DDS leadership, including:
1) Official acknowledgment of the atrocities in Tuli Guuleed.
2) An independent investigation to identify those responsible.
3) Immediate deployment of non-partisan security forces to restore law and order.
4) Unrestricted media access for local journalists to expose the ground reality.
The diaspora warns that without urgent intervention, the crisis will further destabilize the region and fuel longstanding ethnic tensions.
“We remind the DDS leadership that they are constitutionally obligated to protect all citizens. Abandoning Tuli Guuleed amounts to complicity in the violence,” Najib added.
The statement concludes with a powerful call: “Justice delayed is justice denied. The suffering of Tuli Guuleed cannot and will not be ignored.”
As of this reporting, DDS officials have not issued any formal response to the accusations.
