Somali MPs Call for President Hassan Sheikh’s Resignation while the government spokesperson labelled the MPs Al Khawaarij

Mogadishu (WDN) – A group of opposition MPs has urged President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to resign, citing governance failures, corruption, and the worsening national crisis.

“Hassan Sheikh has centralized power, failed the country, and fostered corruption and nepotism. He must step down,” their statement declared.

MP Abdirizak, speaking for the group, warned of impending actions against the government, accusing it of constitutional violations and incompetence.

“Resign and admit your failure—you would be the first leader to do so,” the MPs stated, also urging the Speaker of Parliament to end alleged favoritism toward the administration.

Despite their criticism, they praised the Somali National Army and local communities for their fight against Al-Shabaab, calling for national unity against the militant group.

Opposition MPs have recently intensified their criticism of President Hassan Sheikh, strongly opposing his leadership and policies.

On the other hand, in response to the MPs the Somali Federal Government has strongly dismissed calls for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s resignation.

Deputy Minister of Information, Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala, lashed out at the opposition, labeling them “Al Khawaarij” (a term often used for Al-Shabaab sympathizers).

“The spokespeople of the Khawaarij change daily, but their agenda remains the same,” Al-Adala wrote on Facebook, suggesting the MPs were distracting from the fight against extremists.

His response ignored the MPs’ criticisms, instead equating their opposition with support for terrorists. This rhetoric reflects growing political tensions, as the government faces mounting pressure and increasingly dismisses dissent as extremist sympathies.

The MP stated that they will summon the Deputy  Minister of Information following his remarks of accusing the opposition MPs of aiding Al Shabab
