Bosaso (WDN)- Puntland’s war against ISIL has shifted into high gear, progressing at a speed not seen before in Somalia—without a shred of support from the Federal Government. While Mogadishu remains preoccupied with political maneuvering, focusing on suppressing journalists and consolidating power, Puntland has been busy doing what governments are actually supposed to do: securing its people and eliminating threats.
In a bold show of commitment, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) delivered yesterday a shipment of over 80 military vehicles to Puntland, reinforcing the region’s security forces in their battle against ISIL militants. The ship carrying these vehicles docked at the port of Bosaso, and by nightfall, the equipment was already being deployed to the front lines.
But the UAE is not alone in recognizing Puntland’s pivotal role in fighting terrorism. The United States has also stepped in, quietly providing intelligence, logistical support, and precision airstrikes against ISIL positions. While the Federal Government in Mogadishu drags its feet and pours resources into suppressing opposition voices, Washington and Abu Dhabi have taken decisive action, ensuring that Puntland has the tools it needs to dismantle ISIL’s operations in the Al-Miskaad Mountains.
The UAE’s fighter jets have been relentless, pounding terrorist hideouts, while U.S. drones and special forces advisors have provided critical battlefield intelligence. Unlike the Federal Government, which is more concerned with blocking opposition meetings than blocking terrorist movements, Puntland—backed by its international allies—is making undeniable gains.
Despite being left to fend for itself, Puntland has made astonishing progress. Its forces have pushed deep into terrorist strongholds, disrupting ISIL’s networks and flushing out militants with a precision and speed that Somalia has never witnessed before. The message is clear: Puntland does not wait for handouts, nor does it waste time on political theatrics. It gets the job done.
As Puntland’s offensive accelerates, ISIL’s grip on the region continues to weaken. With no support from the Federal Government but with the strategic backing of the UAE and the U.S., Puntland is proving that security is not just a political slogan—it’s an action. And in this case, action speaks louder than the empty rhetoric coming from Mogadishu.
The question now is: how long can the Federal Government ignore Puntland’s success before it becomes impossible to deny?
