Bossaso (WDN)– In a swift and decisive operation early this morning, Puntland’s defense forces successfully repelled a deadly assault by Daesh militants in the Afka Uurar valley, killing all attackers—many of whom have been confirmed as foreign fighters.

The attack began with a suicide bombing targeting a military base, followed by an attempted ground assault by heavily armed Daesh militants. Puntland forces, however, were prepared and quickly neutralized the threat, eliminating the entire attacking unit at the scene, according to senior military officials.

Photos released from the site show several bodies, all of whom were identified as non-Somali nationals, both Arab and African. Authorities confirmed that no militants survived the engagement, and none managed to escape.

This morning’s failed assault follows a major battle just a day earlier in Ela Miraale, where Puntland forces seized control of the critical Miraale Well—previously a major Daesh stronghold. Military sources say the group was in retreat and attempted to regroup in the Afka Uurar valley, but were intercepted and crushed before they could re-establish a foothold.

“These back-to-back victories demonstrate the increasing capabilities and resolve of Puntland’s security forces in dismantling extremist networks and securing volatile regions,” said one high-ranking commander. “Our message to Daesh is clear: there is no safe haven in Puntland.”

The operation marks a significant blow to Daesh in Somalia, particularly in the mountainous and remote terrains of Bari region, long considered a sanctuary for extremist cells. Puntland’s recent momentum signals a shift in the counterterrorism landscape—tightening control over previously contested zones and disrupting foreign recruitment pipelines.

As military officials assess the aftermath and continue intelligence gathering, analysts say the victory sends a strong message: Puntland is reclaiming territory and taking the fight to those who once operated with impunity.
