Bosaso (WDN) — Puntland security forces have seized a suspicious boat carrying Somali nationals and foreigners, including children, off the coast of the eastern region of Puntland, amid intensified operations against Daesh militants in the area.
According to a statement issued by Puntland authorities, the vessel was intercepted by the Puntland Coast Guard near the coastal village of Ba’at after it reportedly ran out of fuel. The boat was discovered during routine maritime patrols linked to a broader security operation in the region.
“An investigation is underway into a boat and its occupants, captured by our forces after the vessel lost power in the waters off Ba’at in the Eastern Region. The passengers include both Somali and foreign nationals, among them children,” the Puntland government said in its brief statement.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the nationalities of the foreigners or the purpose of their journey. The government confirmed that a full investigation is being conducted and that the public will be informed of the findings once inquiries are concluded.
This maritime seizure comes as Puntland continues a major military campaign against Daesh elements entrenched in the rugged eastern mountain ranges. The offensive, now entering the final stage of its third phase, has reportedly led to significant gains for Puntland’s security forces.
Troops have now advanced into the Miraale Valley — a longtime stronghold of Daesh militants — after a protracted and dangerous ground assault. The valley, known for its treacherous terrain and strategic importance, had remained inaccessible for years due to fierce resistance by militants and local topographical challenges.
Military sources say the Miraale operation marks a critical milestone in Puntland’s battle to dismantle the terrorist network in the region. Forces are said to be conducting cautious clearance operations to secure the area and ensure the remaining threats are neutralized.
The broader offensive across the Al-Miskaad mountain range has seen the liberation of multiple areas previously under Daesh control. As the third phase nears completion, security officials remain vigilant over possible infiltration by foreign fighters or fleeing militants via land or sea routes.
Puntland’s coastal regions have long been a concern for security officials, not only for potential militant movement but also due to their vulnerability to illicit trafficking, smuggling, and unauthorized entry. Today’s seizure of the boat underscores those ongoing concerns.
The Puntland government reiterated its commitment to defending its borders and ensuring that no external threats take root in its territory, particularly as its forces edge closer to dismantling one of the most entrenched Daesh hideouts in Somalia.
Further details on the intercepted vessel and its passengers are expected to be released following the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
