Garowe (WDN) Puntland has taken a bold step forward in its development journey, sealing a landmark $51 million partnership with UNICEF aimed at transforming the lives of its people over the next two years.
The agreement, signed between Puntland’s Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation and UNICEF, sets out an ambitious Rolling Workplan for 2026–2027—one that promises to expand and strengthen essential social services across the region.
At the heart of the deal is an invest in the pillars of human development: healthcare, education, nutrition, water access, and child protection. Beyond service delivery, the partnership also emphasizes stronger coordination, monitoring, and evaluation—ensuring that programs are not only implemented, but deliver real, measurable impact.
The signing ceremony brought together key figures from both sides. Puntland’s newly appointed Minister of Planning, Yusuf Ahmed Mahmoud (Barre Faatax), signed on behalf of the government, while Edith Kabui represented UNICEF. The moment carried a sense of momentum and renewed optimism, signaling a shared determination to accelerate progress.
Officials described the agreement as a major milestone—one that aligns seamlessly with Puntland’s Five-Year Development Plan (2026–2030), particularly its focus on strengthening social and human capital. It is a clear indication that Puntland is not only planning for the future but actively investing in it.
Although the President of Puntland has recently faced mounting accusations of corruption, nepotism, and widespread mismanagement, where critics and citizens allege that development and humanitarian resources have been diverted for personal gain—benefiting his family and close associates. These practices, they argue, have contributed to the erosion of essential public services, diminished employment opportunities, and a growing loss of public confidence in the administration.
With this partnership, Puntland is positioning itself to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of its citizens—especially children and vulnerable communities. The scale of the investment, coupled with the strategic focus of the programs, underscores a growing confidence in the region’s development trajectory.
For many, this is more than just a funding agreement. It is a statement of intent: that Puntland is building, partnering, and pushing forward with purpose—determined to turn opportunity into lasting progress.
