Puntland President Calls for Urgent National Conference Amid Political Deadlock in Somalia

Garowe (WDN)— In a major diplomatic move, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has called for an urgent national conference to resolve Somalia’s deepening political crisis. The call came during a high-level virtual meeting with representatives of the international community, led by the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan.

With the National Consultative Council (NCC) now effectively paralyzed, President Deni urged that Somalia’s top political figures — including the Federal Government, Federal Member States, former national leaders, and key civil society actors — convene for comprehensive talks aimed at breaking the political stalemate and charting a new way forward.

“This is a defining moment for Somalia. We need all hands-on deck. No one can be excluded if we are to secure a lasting solution for the country,” President Deni declared.

The Puntland leadership also used the occasion to thank international partners for their continued support in Somalia’s long and fragile state-building process. However, the President stressed that Somalia still requires the strong backing of its international allies to stabilize and strengthen its political institutions.

In a show of strong support, international envoys praised Puntland’s recent decisive military operations against terrorist groups entrenched in the region, hailing the success of Puntland forces in delivering major blows to extremist networks. The meeting comes as Puntland solidifies its role as a leading voice for dialogue, reform, and security in Somalia’s evolving political landscape.
