Puntland: Mudug Leaders Issue Urgent Call for Action Amid Growing Insecurity and Development Stagnation

GAROWE (WDN)— A group of nearly 30 political and public figures from Mudug region (Puntland side) have issued a joint statement sounding the alarm over the deteriorating security situation and stalled development efforts in the region. The group is urging the Puntland government to take immediate and decisive steps to address both the persistent insecurity and lack of development and economic progress.

In their strongly worded appeal, the leaders expressed deep concern over recurring clan conflicts, rising insecurity, and stalled infrastructure projects that have paralyzed development in Mudug. They warned that without urgent government intervention, the region risks descending further into instability and economic stagnation.

At the center of their demands is a call for President Said Abdullahi Deni’s administration to lift all restrictions on stalled development projects, with special emphasis on resuming construction of the vital Xarfo-Galkayo road, which has faced repeated delays.
“We call on the government to unconditionally and urgently lift the restrictions on all stalled projects in the region, with priority given to the Xarfo-Galkayo road,” the statement read.

The group also issued a strong plea for an immediate ceasefire in all ongoing clan conflicts, calling for peaceful dialogue to resolve disputes and for swift justice to address longstanding vendettas that continue to fuel instability.

“Swift action must be taken to address the recurring clan vendettas and resolve them through lawful justice,” the leaders urged.

As tensions continue to simmer in Mudug, the group called for a major regional conference, inviting political figures and local leaders to come together and develop comprehensive solutions for the region’s security and development challenges. The timing of the conference will be announced at a later date.

The statement reflects growing frustration among the people of Mudug and the wider Puntland state, who accuse President Deni’s administration of neglecting and mismanagement of critical issues, while the region faces mounting risks that threaten the stability and prosperity of its people.
