Bosaso (WDN)- In a decisive push to rid Puntland of extremism, the region’s defense forces on Monday launched a renewed clearance operation targeting the remaining remnants of the ISIS-affiliated militant group in the Cal-Miskaad mountains.
The operation, part of the fourth and reportedly final phase of “Operation Hillaac,” is being conducted across multiple fronts, with security forces expanding their presence into areas where fleeing militants are believed to be hiding.
“The troops are advancing into the last pockets where terrorists may be in hiding,” said a statement from the media office overseeing the Cal Miskaad operation. “This is a focused and determined effort to cleanse the region of the remaining fugitives.”
While the Cal-Miskaad range has long served as a rugged stronghold for extremist elements, Puntland officials say the ISIS threat has been significantly degraded. With morale high among the troops and local communities offering support, military sources describe this phase as the beginning of the end for the group’s presence in the area.
Security analysts note that the progress made in dismantling ISIS’s foothold in Puntland represents a milestone in Somalia’s broader counterterrorism campaign, particularly as the region increasingly takes the lead in securing its territory.
“Though the terrain is challenging, Puntland’s forces have shown discipline, resilience, and determination,” one analyst noted. “What we’re seeing now is a final effort to seal a hard-fought victory.”
Officials have also highlighted the importance of post-operation stabilization, including the rehabilitation of affected areas and support for displaced communities. Puntland’s government has pledged to ensure that gains on the battlefield are followed by investments in peace, development, and community resilience.
With the latest offensive underway, optimism is growing that Puntland is on the brink of eliminating a long-standing security threat, allowing the region to refocus its energy on reconstruction and progress.
