Puntland Issues Urgent Health Warning as Deadly Infectious Children Disease Spreads in Mudug

Galkayo (WDN)- Authorities in Puntland’s Mudug region have issued a public health alert following the outbreak of diphtheria, a dangerous infectious disease that is primarily affecting children. The disease, locally referred to as “Gawracatada,” has already claimed the lives of several children, prompting urgent action from regional health officials.

In a statement released on Friday, the Mudug Regional Administration called on parents and guardians to seek immediate medical attention for any child exhibiting symptoms. Officials did not disclose specific symptoms in the initial statement but emphasized the disease’s rapid transmission and deadly impact.

“The public is urged to take affected children to health centers without delay,” the administration said.

As part of emergency containment measures, authorities have also banned gatherings of unvaccinated children, including attendance at schools, playgrounds, and other public areas where young people congregate.

The ban takes effect immediately and applies to all children who have not received vaccinations, though the administration did not specify which vaccine or disease strain is involved.

The outbreak has triggered growing concern in the region, where health infrastructure is already under strain and access to preventive care remains limited in rural areas.

Health officials are working to investigate the source of the outbreak and assess the risk of further spread. The Puntland Ministry of Health is expected to issue a more detailed advisory in the coming days.

Local residents are being urged to follow preventive health guidelines and remain vigilant as authorities monitor the situation closely.
