Puntland Authorities Clarify Misreported Incident Involving Migrant Boat Off Bacaad Coast

Bacaad (WDN) The Puntland government has dispelled rumors surrounding a vessel intercepted off the coast of Bacaad in the eastern region, confirming after an official investigation that the boat was carrying migrants—not families of Daesh fighters as previously speculated.

The incident sheds light on the growing migration flows through Bosaso’s coastline, a known transit point for migrants seeking to cross the Gulf of Aden—often in dangerous, unregulated conditions.

According to security officials in the Eastern province, the boat originated from the port city of Bosaso and was transporting a group of Somali and foreign migrants, the majority of whom were women and children. The investigation found no evidence to support claims that the passengers had links to terrorist groups.

A senior investigator speaking on condition of anonymity told our reporters that the boat became stranded near the Ba’at area after running out of fuel. Puntland maritime forces responded promptly, securing the vessel and ensuring the safety of those onboard.

“This was clearly a humanitarian case involving vulnerable migrants, not a security threat,” the official stated, calling for accurate reporting to avoid unnecessary public alarm and stigmatization of migrant movements.

Puntland authorities say they will continue to enhance coastal surveillance to both safeguard maritime security and protect human lives.
