Private Palace Talks End in Deadlock as President Hassan Refuses Electoral Compromise

MOGADISHU (WDN) – A meeting between President Hassan and opposition figures from the Somalia Future Council, particularly those closely related to him, has just concluded at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu.

Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, MP Abdikadir Cosoble, and Khalif Abdikadir Moallin Noor held a private session with President Hassan to discuss the contentious issue of upcoming elections, over which there remains significant disagreement regarding the electoral model.

According to information obtained, the leaders — all of whom are presidential candidates in the forthcoming elections — held informal, family-linked discussions on how the government might organize elections that are broadly agreed upon and conducted on time.

Although no official statement has been released by the parties involved, unconfirmed reports suggest that President Hassan refused to abandon his plan for a one-person, one-vote election. The politicians who met with him reportedly urged a compromise formula that could secure consensus.

Sources further indicate that President Hassan assured the opposition he is willing to discuss other outstanding issues but remains firm in his position that he cannot accept any electoral model other than direct elections in which citizens vote to choose their leaders.

The meeting reportedly ended after several hours without a breakthrough.

WardheerNews is closely following this failed breakthrough attempt and will provide further updates as more details emerge, including whether another round of talks is expected and what, if anything, was ultimately agreed upon.
