MOGADISHU (WDN) – President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a firm message last night during the conclusion of national independence commemorations, directly addressing opposition criticism surrounding the country’s electoral process.
Speaking about national unity, President Hassan emphasized that Somalia is a sovereign and indivisible nation, acknowledging the existence of differing political opinions, but insisting those differences must be resolved within the framework of a united country.
“To our brothers in the North, we want you to know that we miss you and hope you will once again work with us to strengthen national unity. We love you. There can be political differences, which are natural and can be discussed—but Somalia remains one,” the president stated.
Addressing opposition politicians who have expressed skepticism about the government’s electoral roadmap, President Hassan declared that no political figure can block Somalia’s path toward holding universal suffrage elections.
“When it comes to our goal of achieving one-person, one-vote elections, some may suggest there are easier routes, but we are not interested in any path that deviates from this objective,” he said.
He also signaled openness to constructive feedback: “We are open to correction where necessary, but there must be a proper process. If we are to be corrected, it must be done within a legitimate system. We will not accept being told that this road cannot be taken, or that progress must be halted.”
President Hassan’s remarks reflect his administration’s commitment to implementing a democratic electoral system—despite rising tensions and political pushback.
