Mogadishu (WDN)- Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has openly promoted Ankara’s oil ambitions in Somalia, presenting the initiative not merely as economic cooperation but as a clear display of Turkish power and influence.

Speaking before parliament, Erdoğan expressed strong optimism about the planned oil exploration operations Turkey is preparing to launch in Somalia—signaling a deepening strategic footprint in the Horn of Africa. But it was not policy details that defined his message. It was imagery.

Erdoğan recounted the reaction of a young Somali who recently saw the Turkish exploration vessel Çağrı Bey positioned off Somalia’s coast. According to the president, the boy described the ship as overwhelming—“like a moving city,” vast, modern, and striking in its design.

Erdoğan used it to project a narrative of technological superiority and national strength, casting Turkey as a country that brings scale, capability, and visible power wherever it operates.

The message was unmistakable: Turkey is not quietly entering Somalia’s oil sector—it is announcing its presence. And in a region where foreign influence is increasingly contested, such displays are not just economic signals. They are geopolitical statements.
