MOGADISHU (WDN) – Senior Somali opposition leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame has accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of extending what he described as the sale of national assets beyond Somalia’s borders, escalating his criticism of the Federal Government amid the country’s deepening constitutional and political crisis.

Abdirahman, who heads the Wadajir Party and is a leading figure in the opposition Future Council, alleged that after exhausting public assets inside Somalia, the President has now turned his attention to Somali-owned properties abroad.

“After the auctioning of public land inside the country was no longer enough, Hassan Sheikh has now moved on to Somali national assets located overseas,” Abdirahman said.

The opposition politician did not identify the specific overseas assets he was referring to, but his remarks add to a growing exchange of accusations between the Federal Government and opposition leaders over the management of public resources.

Abdirahman went further, warning that unless the President is restrained, the government could eventually seek to dispose of even more strategically significant national assets. “If this is not stopped in time, he may ultimately move to sell the country’s islands,” he claimed. He stressed that Somalia’s public assets belong to the nation as a whole and should never be treated as the property of any individual administration.

“National assets are not the property of any individual or any government to misuse. They are the inheritance of the Somali people and future generations. It is a national duty to protect them, manage them transparently, and hold accountable anyone who abuses or misappropriates them,” Abdirahman said.

His comments come at a time of heightened political tensions, with Somalia’s Federal Government and opposition groups locked in disputes over constitutional legitimacy, electoral arrangements, and the management of state institutions.

The Federal Government has not publicly responded to Abdirahman’s latest allegations. As of publication, no official evidence has been presented publicly to substantiate the opposition leader’s claims regarding the sale or planned disposal of Somali state assets overseas.

The accusations nevertheless underscore the widening political divide between President Hassan Sheikh’s administration and the opposition, as both sides continue to clash over issues of governance, accountability, and the stewardship of Somalia’s national resources.
