Mogadishu (WDN) – Reports emerging from Villa Somalia indicate that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is preparing to dismiss the Governor of Banaadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Mohamed Ahmed Amir, amid growing frustration over his lack of performance.
Sources close to the presidency confirm that President Hassan is actively vetting potential replacements, having lost confidence in Amir’s leadership. The recent downpour, which struck the city two nights ago, killed nearly ten people, destroyed numerous homes, submerged entire roads, and caused widespread disruption. His absence abroad during recent deadly floods in Mogadishu has only deepened public resentment.
Residents of Mogadishu—who are reported as most heavily taxed population in the country—have repeatedly expressed outrage over the lack of services in return. Despite contributing significantly to national revenue, Mogadishu remains plagued by crumbling infrastructure, unsafe roads, and poor emergency response.
Public frustration, however, is not directed solely at the mayor. Critics argue that the dysfunction reflects the deeper rot within the current administration. Since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud returned to office on May 15, 2022, more than 90% of government appointments have reportedly been made based on clan affiliation, sidelining merit, experience, and professionalism.
“It’s a family-run government,” one senior analyst remarked, “where public offices are handed out based on loyalty to the president’s clan, not public service capability.”
As Mogadishu continues to suffer under seasonal floods and administrative mismanagement, residents are increasingly calling for systemic reform—starting with the removal of leaders who have failed to deliver on their promises.
