Mogadishu (WDN) – A severe decree issued by the Macawisley militia in Hiiraan has ordered the immediate expulsion of women married to Al-Shabaab fighters from the Hirshabelle region, particularly Hiiraan. In a meeting held in the district of Moqokori, Macawisley commanders declared that they have so far identified four such women and are actively searching for others. They warned that any wife who fails to comply will be forcibly removed from the region.
The Macawisley claim the women are more dangerous than the fighters themselves, accusing them of leaking sensitive information about anti-terror operations to their husbands. This is the first time such a decree has been publicly issued by the militia, raising serious legal and humanitarian concerns.
WardheerNews strongly emphasizes that the issuance of mass expulsion orders—especially those targeting entire families and communities—must come from the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), not from armed militias operating outside the law. Without state oversight and accountability, such actions could spiral into mass atrocities disguised as counter-terrorism measures.
The ultimatum has evoked painful memories for many in Somalia. During the civil war in 1991, following the collapse of the central government, militias in Hiiraan slaughtered thousands of refugees—including women and children— who had fled from Ethiopia’s Ogaden region. Many view those events as precursors to the current actions of the Macawisley. Survivors and historians describe the massacre as one of the darkest chapters in Somalia’s recent history. The parallels between past atrocities and today’s threats are deeply alarming, particularly in the absence of state oversight and mechanisms for accountability.
“If Macawisley is not reined in, we may be staring into the face of mass murder under the pretext of fighting Al-Shabaab informers,” said a legal expert based in Mogadishu. “This is why the rule of law and due process are non-negotiable.”
The Federal Government has yet to issue an official response to the militia’s statement, but pressure is mounting for immediate action to prevent potential human rights violations.
