Leadership Disputes Force Postponement of SSC-Khatumo Conference

Laascaanood (WDN)— The conference to finalize the formation of the SSC-Khatumo administration is once again postponed on Saturday, after facing stiff resistance from opposition political figures and influential traditional elders.

The gathering, initially set to open on Saturday, was derailed by vocal objections from key stakeholders, including Garaad Jaamac Garaad Cali, a leading traditional authority in the region, and several political contenders for SSC-Khatumo’s top leadership post. Their main grievance centered on the perceived imposition of hand-picked representatives from Sanaag and Haylaan, specifically under the Warsangeli clan’s name, without broad community consultation.

“We will not be governed by decisions made elsewhere,” Garaad Jaamac said during a press conference. “What I opposed for 15 years is now being brought back under a different name. We will not allow others to speak for the Warsangeli. Let us pursue a unified approach, not decisions made behind closed doors,” he declared, firmly distancing himself from the conference process.

The controversy highlights a deepening rift within SSC-Khatumo’s leadership ranks, particularly over representation and transparency in the region’s political reorganization.

Adding weight to the dissent, Suldaan Siciid Suldaan Cabdisalaam, the Supreme Traditional Leader of the Warsangeli and the Harti Koombe, also issued a statement condemning the inclusion of unauthorized delegates in the conference. He made it clear that the Warsangeli clan is not part of the Laascaanood talks, and called on theFederal Government of Somalia to refrain from actions that could ignite conflict among the historically intertwined communities of Sanaagand Sool.

“The government should not involve itself in schemes that divide brotherly communities,” the Sultan said, echoing broader concerns that federal interference may be driving instability in the region.

With momentum stalled and questions mounting about the legitimacy of the process, the SSC-Khatumo leadership faces a growing crisis of confidence, both within its ranks and among its traditional constituencies. The postponement underscores the need for a more inclusive and locally grounded approach to governance in the contested northern territories.
