Jigjiga Faces Prolonged Power Outage, Sparking Economic and Health Concerns

Jigjiga (WDN)- The capital city of the Somali Regional State, Jigjiga, has been faced with a severe electricity outage for the past two nights, leaving residents and businesses in the dark. As a critical lifeline for life, the absence of electricity has disrupted daily activities, creating significant economic and health challenges for the community.

The power supply, which is sourced from the highlands of Ethiopia, has reportedly been inconsistent, leading to prolonged outages in Jigjiga. This interruption has not only inconvenienced residents but has also had a cascading effect on local businesses and healthcare services.

WardheerNews, which has been contacted by business owners and healthcare professionals, reported that the outagein the capital city Jigjiga,  has exacerbated existing economic difficulties and posed serious health risks. Many businesses, particularly those reliant on power or electronic transactions, have suffered financial losses. Meanwhile, healthcare facilities are struggling to maintain essential services, with limited access to life-saving medical equipment that depends on a stable power supply.

Compounding the issue is the limited capacity of residents and institutions to rely on backup generators. While some businesses and healthcare centers have attempted to mitigate the impact using generators, the high cost of fuel and maintenance has made this an unsustainable solution for many.

The prolonged power outage has sparked growing frustration among Jigjiga’s residents, who are calling for urgent action from regional and national authorities to restore electricity and address the underlying issues causing these disruptions. As the city remains in the dark, the situation underscores the critical need for improved infrastructure and reliable energy solutions to support the region’s economic growth and public health.

For now, the people of Jigjiga continue to endure the challenges brought on by the blackout, hoping for a swift resolution to restore normalcy to their daily lives.
