Kismayo (WDN)- WardheerNews has learned from reliable sources that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Jubbaland leader Ahmed Madobe are set to meet in Kismayo, following months of mediation efforts held in Dubai and Nairobi. The breakthrough meeting is reportedly facilitated by the governments of the United Arab Emirates and Kenya.
As recently as November 2024, the two leaders had issued arrest and prosecution orders against one another. These mutual warrants not only delegitimized each other’s authority but also escalated the political standoff, fueling armed confrontations between federal and regional forces in Ras Kamboni and the Gedo region.
The two sides now seem poised to reach a political settlement. Sources indicate that the anticipated agreement would see Villa Somalia formally acknowledge Ahmed Madobe as the legitimate President of Jubbaland, while paving the way for broader negotiations on electoral processes and constitutional reforms—initiatives that President Hassan Sheikh has until now pursued unilaterally.
While Madobe’s position remains firm, the agenda Hassan Sheikh intends to table in Kismayo is still unclear. Jubbaland, Puntland, and opposition leaders have already dismissed unilateral constitutional changes and Villa Somalia’s electoral commission as unacceptable.
Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has been in Nairobi holding consultations with Ahmed Madobe to coordinate a unified stance ahead of the talks. This alignment could prove critical in shaping the outcome of the dialogue with Hassan Sheikh
Somalia’s political cycle has historically been marred by turbulence and brinkmanship, especially during election seasons.
Villa Somalia’s authoritarian posture and wasted time on divisive moves have deepened the country’s fragile security and political crisis. It remains uncertain whether the Mogadishu-based opposition will be included in the negotions and recommendations emerging from the upcoming Hassan Sheikh–Madobe talks.
