BALAD-HAWO (WDN) — Government forces have made multiple offensives in Balad-Hawo, Gedo region, after nearly a week of intense armed clashes. Initially confined to a military base previously used by UK-trained troops, the federal forces have now advanced into several civilian areas. According to local sources, people fled the city, and the fighting has reached key parts of the city, including Waaberi neighborhood, the Arab School, Somtec University, and the Qansax Oomane area.
Correspondents on the ground say that clashes are ongoing across most of the city with no side emerging as clearly dominant.
The escalation has triggered a mass displacement, with hundreds of families fleeing their homes. Many are now living in makeshift conditions on the town’s outskirts, while others have crossed the border into Kenya, seeking safety in Mandera.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the renewed hostilities or efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
