Gaalkacyo (WDN)— Authorities in Gaalkacyo have announced a ban on all political meetings and public gatherings that are not explicitly approved by the local administration, marking a significant move aimed at tightening control over political activity in the city.
In a statement issued by the Gaalkacyo District Municipality, the local government declared that, effective immediately, all meetings, public assemblies, or community events must receive prior authorization from municipal officials.
“From today onward, the organization of meetings, gatherings, or any public assembly without formal approval from the Gaalkacyo Local Government is strictly prohibited,” the statement reads.
The directive particularly targets hotels, conference venues, and other private establishments, warning them not to permit any political or social meetings without official clearance.
“Hotels, meeting halls, and other privately owned venues in Gaalkacyo are hereby instructed not to host any event—political or otherwise—without written permission from the municipal government,” the statement continued.
The municipality warned that any individual, group, or organization found to be hosting unauthorized events will face legal action.
The decision comes amid rising political tensions across Somalia, as regional administrations seek to regulate public discourse and maintain control over political narratives. While local officials argue that the measure is intended to maintain public order, critics may see it as a potential restriction on freedom of assembly and political expression.
No further details were given regarding the duration of the ban or specific penalties for violations.
