Laascaanood (WDN)— Former Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives, Abdirisak Khalif Ahmed has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency of SSC-Khatumo, marking a significant political shift in the region.
Khalif, who stepped down from his post in Somaliland in protest over the government’s handling of local grievances, declared his intention to contest the top leadership position of the emerging SSC-Khatumo administration during a public reception in the region’s capital.
“I am officially announcing my candidacy for the presidency of SSC-Khatumo,” Khaliif said. “I can no longer remain on the sidelines. I believe the time has come to take the initiative and lead this administration to its next phase.”
“Some individuals claim SSC is being steered back into the hands of others,” he said. “That narrative is an insult to our elders and to the intelligence of our people. SSC has moved beyond the days when individuals could unilaterally dictate its future. It is now an established administration that stands alongside other Somali federal entities.”
Touching on regional relations, Khalif addressed the future of cooperation with neighboring Puntland, describing it as a relationship of mutual respect and shared vision.
“Puntland and SSC-Khatumo will remain two brotherly administrations that support one another,” he stated. “Where we disagree, we will show tolerance. And where we share common goals, I will engage with wisdom and experience.”
Khalif’s announcement comes at a pivotal moment for SSC-Khatumo, which continues to navigate its political autonomy following the withdrawal of Somaliland forces from Laascaanood earlier this year. His entry into the presidential race is expected to reshape the region’s political landscape and accelerate momentum toward formalizing its administrative institutions.
