Former NISA Chief Mahad Salaad is Poised to Return Amid Major Security Leadership Shake Up

Mogadishu (WDN) — In a significant shake-up of Somalia’s security leadership, Mahad Mohamed Salaad is poised to return as head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), according to sources within the ruling Union for Peace and Development (UPD) party.

Mahad was reportedly planning to run for the presidency of Galmudug. However, this new development—if it materializes—could significantly impact his aspirations, especially as President Qoorqoor’s term has already expired but is currently being extended by Villa Somalia.

President Hassan Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre are reportedly behind the decision to restructure the nation’s security apparatus amid growing criticism over the government’s faltering performance in the ongoing war against insurgents.

The leadership transition is expected to begin with the removal of current NISA chief Abdullahi Sanbaloolshe. The planned overhaul is not limited to intelligence leadership. Insiders indicate changes will extend to the military’s upper ranks, including the Commander of the Land Forces and several subordinate commanders. The reorganization reportedly aims to streamline command and enhance operational effectiveness on the battlefield.

The news of Mahad Salaad’s return has sparked widespread attention on social media—drawing the ire of President Hassan Sheikh, who is said to be frustrated by the premature leak. In response, the Prime Minister’s office reportedly attempted to retract the announcement, though the information had already gained traction online.

Among the figures considered for reinstatement is a former Commander of the Ground Forces. Additionally, there is speculation that the sitting Commander of the Land Forces may be sacked as part of a broader restructuring plan proposed by General Odawa, the current Armed Forces Chief. The plan could also see the elimination of the separate Land Forces Commander role altogether.

As the situation develops, all eyes remain on Villa Somalia and the evolving dynamics within the country’s top security echelons.
