Fire at Nairobi’s Eastleigh Market Devastates Somali Businessmen

Nairobi (WDN) –– A devastating fire swept through the Somali neighborhood of Islii in Nairobi on Saturday afternoon destroying property and causing significant losses to local business owners. Islii, one of the city’s largest commercial hubs for the Somali community, is known for its bustling marketplaces and vibrant trade activity.

The fire broke out at Yare Business Park, located near Eastleigh Mall on 12th Street, engulfing several commercial units. Among those affected was Nur Sheikh Mohamed, a Somali entrepreneur who lost his clothing and household goods business in the blaze. He estimated the total value of his lost assets at $180,000.

Residents quickly shared photos and videos on social media, capturing the scale of the fire and the rapid response of local emergency teams. While the evacuation of the building’s lower floors helped save lives, much of the inventory on the ground and upper levels was destroyed.

Emergency responders worked to contain the fire and prevent further damage to nearby shops and residences. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze and coordinating with local business associations to provide support for the victims.
