Mogadishu (WDN) — More details are emerging about a deadly explosion that struck Mogadishu’s Dayniile district earlier today, claiming at least one life and injuring several others in an apparent roadside bomb attack.
The blast occurred near the Muumino Elbur Mosque, close to the administrative headquarters of the district. Eyewitnesses and local sources told WDN that the explosive device was planted along the pavement, near a small tea shop frequently visited by civilians.
According to preliminary reports, one person was killed on the spot, and three others sustained injuries of varying severity. The attack happened during a busy period when locals had gathered at the tea shop, making the impact particularly devastating for innocent bystanders.
“The explosion was sudden and loud—we heard it from far away,” said one resident who lives a few blocks from the site. “People were screaming and running. Most of the victims were just regular people having tea.”
Witnesses described scenes of chaos following the blast, with the area quickly cordoned off by local authorities and security forces. The incident site lies within a zone that has seen an uptick in security activity in recent days, raising concerns that the explosion may have been aimed at security patrols operating nearby.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and security officials have yet to release a formal statement. However, given the nature of the device and its location, suspicions are already pointing toward groups seeking to destabilize the capital and target government forces.
This latest attack adds to a growing list of security incidents in Mogadishu that have intensified fears among residents and raised fresh questions about the city’s vulnerability to asymmetric threats, particularly those posed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Authorities have promised a full investigation, with updates expected in the coming hours as more information becomes available. Security experts say the placement of the device near a civilian gathering spot is a disturbing tactic that underscores the indiscriminate nature of the threat facing urban centers in Somalia.
WDN will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they are released by security officials.
