Ex-Hirshabelle Leader Cosoble Launches Baseless Tirade Against UN Envoy

Mogadishu (WDN)- In a statement that has drawn more ridicule for its absurdity than its substance, former Hirshabelle President Ali Abdullahi Cosoble launched a scathing — and wholly unsubstantiated — attack against United Nations Special Representative James Swan, accusing the seasoned diplomat of acting as a “spokesman for the opposition.”

Cosoble, whose political career is widely regarded as a spectacular failure, appeared to be grasping at straws as he ranted without evidence, alleging that Swan was the mouthpiece for the Council for the Salvation of the Somali People, a prominent opposition alliance. “James Swan has become the official spokesman of the opposition—those people who won’t be persuaded or reasoned with,” Cosoble claimed, without offering a fact to back his inflammatory statement.

Cosoble, once ousted and now irrelevant in Somalia’s political landscape, has a long history of latching onto controversy to stay visible. Many Somalis view him as a political opportunist with no credibility or influence, a man more known for his erratic outbursts than any meaningful contribution to governance or peacebuilding.

“If anything, Cosoble’s latest comments expose is his desperation for relevance,” said one political analyst in Mogadishu. “He’s acting less like a statesman and more like a disgruntled juvenile. This is a man who has no political base, no public trust, and certainly no moral authority.”

In a further stretch of logic, Cosoble accused opposition politicians of “standing in front of foreigners every morning” — a vague and immature swipe that offered little insight beyond personal frustration.

As the country grapples with serious political and security challenges, Cosoble’s comments are being widely dismissed as a sideshow from a figure long discredited by his own failures. His remarks may have sought to damage others, but instead, they have only deepened the perception of a man out of touch and out of ideas.
