Garowe (WDN) – Amid the rise of Piracy off the coast of Somalia, there was a clash today, in the coastal town of Garacad, Mudug region in Puntland, where clashed took place between an armed group and local security authorities.
The Commander of the Mudug regional police division, Colonel Mahmoud Muse Fardafuul, has addressed the press regarding a violent clash that broke out early this morning in the Garacad area. According to his statement, the confrontation resulted in casualties, including both deaths and injuries.
Colonel Fardafuul explained during a press conference in Galkayo that an armed group launched an attack on the Garacad police station at dawn. At the time, several men accused of piracy were being held at the station. The assault led to the death of one officer from the Puntland police force and left another officer wounded.
He emphasized that security forces are actively pursuing the attackers and vowed that they will be brought before the law. Reports suggest that at least one member of the armed group was also injured during the exchange of fire.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the area. Near Garacad, a commercial vessel named MV Sward remains under the control of pirates. The ship was hijacked just days ago, approximately 12 miles off the Somali coast, underscoring the persistent threat of piracy in the region.
