Garrowe – (WDN) – In the early hours of the morning, police in Garowe detained Suweys Jama Mahmoud Gacayte, a well-known Puntland journalist whose reporting has largely focused on public opinion, social issues, and entertainment.
According to local sources, officers from the Puntland Police Force arrived at her residence in Garowe and took her into custody. By Wednesday evening, authorities had still not publicly disclosed the reason for her arrest, fueling speculation and concern among journalists and civil society groups across Puntland.

Gacayte’s detention quickly triggered a wave of condemnation from media professionals, many of whom described the arrest as alarming given the absence of any official explanation. Colleagues say she is widely recognized for giving ordinary citizens a platform to express their views and for covering issues that resonate with the public.
A Broader Crackdown?
The arrest comes amid a broader tightening of political controls in Puntland. In a separate development, the administration of Mudug Region announced a ban on political meetings and gatherings held without prior government authorization.
In a directive issued by Mudug Governor Abdiweli Jibril Bayle, security agencies and district authorities were ordered to prevent any unauthorized political meetings from taking place in hotels, conference halls, or other venues.
“The regional police commander, the intelligence chief, and district commissioners are instructed that no political meetings may be held in hotels or elsewhere without permission from the Mudug regional administration,” the governor said in the order.
Hotel owners and managers of conference facilities were also warned not to host political gatherings unless organizers obtained formal approval from the authorities. The administration said legal action would be taken against anyone who violates the directive.
A Pattern Emerging
The measures have drawn attention because they follow a similar decision recently imposed in Karkaar Region, where the Puntland government also restricted political meetings that had not been cleared by the authorities.
Coming just days after those restrictions, the unexplained arrest of a prominent journalist has intensified debate over whether Puntland is entering a new phase of heightened political control.
For now, one question hangs over Garowe: Why was Suweys Gacayte arrested?
Until authorities provide an answer, the mystery surrounding her detention is likely to deepen scrutiny of Puntland’s recent security and political measures.
