Al-Shabaab Seizes Strategic Water Wells Near Mogadishu, Raising Security Fears

Mogadishu (WDN) – Al-Shabaab militants have made significant territorial gains near Mogadishu, seizing control of the Water Wells area (Ceeelasha Biyaha) on the outskirts of the capital. The incursion, which took place last night, marks a troubling escalation in the group’s operations as they tighten their grip on areas between Mogadishu and Afgoye.

Eyewitnesses told Wardheernews that this is the fourth consecutive night of Al-Shabaab’s movements in the area. The militants swiftly occupied key locations, cut power to main streets, and instructed residents to remain indoors. Notably, government forces offered no resistance, vacating their camps as the insurgents took over.

In a further show of strength, Al-Shabaab militants were seen patrolling neighborhoods and consolidating their presence, while government troops previously stationed at checkpoints withdrew and regrouped at the Sinai Long Station, situated between the Water Wells and Tareedisho areas.

The militant group has also been sighted in Hawo-Abdi and Lafoole, intensifying fears of an imminent attack on Afgoye. Meanwhile, in Awdheegle district, residents remain confined to their homes, wary of potential airstrikes as warplanes circle overhead. Despite the looming aerial threat, Al-Shabaab fighters continue to operate freely within the town.

Security discussions are reportedly underway in Mogadishu as authorities assess the growing threat. This development is particularly alarming, as it marks the closest Al-Shabaab has come to the capital in the past decade. The group has publicly vowed to capture Mogadishu by the 17th of Ramadan, further exacerbating tensions.

Elsewhere, in central Somalia, fierce clashes erupted in areas under Adale district, where government forces reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on Al-Shabaab. Despite this, the militants remain emboldened, pressing forward with their offensive.

Somalia is at a critical juncture as Al-Shabaab ramps up its campaign, exploiting the national army’s dwindling strength, organizational challenges, and sluggish response. The situation calls for immediate intervention to prevent further territorial losses and safeguard the country’s security.
