Mogadishu (WDN) – Opposition to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is intensifying, marked by escalating tensions and increasingly heated exchanges between opposition leaders and members of his cabinet. In recent weeks, criticism of the president’s leadership has sharpened, with ministers clashing publicly with rivals over issues ranging from governance failures to allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
Prominent opposition figure and Member of Parliament Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame has escalated his criticism of the Somali government, declaring what he described as a “political war” against the administration in Mogadishu.
In one of his strongest statements to date, Abdishakur accused the government of engaging in land grabbing in the capital and called on citizens to resist what he termed the “family enterprise” now controlling state institutions.
“The Somali government has turned into a family-run entity, dispossessing people of their property. Stand up to them—we are with you,” Abdishakur said.
The opposition leader further argued that meaningful elections cannot be held under the current administration, alleging that opposition politicians are being intimidated and threatened with violence.
His remarks came in response to recent comments by Defense Minister Ahmed Fiqi, who warned that opposition groups would not be allowed to arm themselves. Abdishakur dismissed the minister’s warning, insisting that Fiqi was speaking on behalf of the presidency.
“Fiqi’s words were dictated by the presidency, and we take them seriously. But the question remains: how can elections be conducted under such a government?” he asked.
The confrontation underscores the deepening political rift between Somalia’s opposition leaders and the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as disputes over Constitution, governance, security, and upcoming elections continue to intensify.
