Galkayo, Somalia (WDN) – The planned Mudug Regional Development Conference, originally scheduled for July 30, has become the center of political friction after the Puntland government requested a 10-day postponement, sparking assertions of obstruction and neglect.
The conference, which aims to catalyze development efforts in the Mudug region, particularly in Galkayo, is being organized by local leaders and community stakeholders. However, its postponement request from the Puntland administration has drawn criticism from residents and organizers who see the move as a veiled attempt to undermine the initiative.
WardheerNews spoke with former Puntland Minister of Education, Ali Haji Warsame, one of the key organizers, who expressed concern over what he described as “a deliberate effort by the government to derail a much-needed grassroots development effort.” He emphasized that there was no justification for a delay.
Many residents of Galkayo have voiced frustration over what they view as the Puntland government’s longstanding neglect of regional development, argue that instead of supporting a community-led initiative, the administration is attempting to delegitimize it through unfounded political allegations. The organizers have refuted claims that the event was being coordinated by the Federal Government. And stated “This conference is for the people of Mudug, not a federal agenda.”
The controversy also raises questions about the state of Puntland’s democratization process. While the region held historic local council elections, the government’s stance toward the Mudug conference has been interpreted by many as a sign that genuine political pluralism remains elusive. “This is not about development anymore—it’s about control and silencing independent civic action,” said one Galkayo community leader.
Attempts by WardheerNews to reach Puntland’s Minister of Interior for an official comment were unsuccessful.
The future of the conference remains uncertain, but organizers insist it will proceed as planned—with or without government endorsement.
