An Appeal to the Federal Government, Federal Member States, Opposition Alliances, and All Political and Public Figures of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The Federal Republic of Somalia stands at a critical juncture in its modern history. The recent geopolitical maneuvers, including the potential recognition of the Somaliland region by external actors, represent more than a diplomatic challenge; they constitute an existential test of Somali statehood.
In this hour of profound uncertainty, the most formidable defense against external encroachment is not found in foreign alliances or military hardware, but in the restoration of an unbreakable national unity.
The Peril of Fragmentation in a Realignment of Power
The international system is witnessing a fundamental realignment of regional power dynamics, where the principle of territorial integrity is increasingly being tested by strategic interests. The possibility of external actors signaling a shift in policy towards the region suggests a concerted effort to capitalize on internal vulnerabilities. A nation that is politically fragmented sends a clear signal of instability to the world, inviting external interference and undermining its legal standing.
The ongoing friction between the Federal Government, opposition leaders, and Federal Member States over constitutional frameworks, electoral reforms, and resource sharing provides a dangerous opening for those who seek to exploit Somali weakness. Political fragmentation is a luxury that a nation under existential threat cannot afford. History is replete with examples where a divided nation, preoccupied with internal squabbles, was easily “swallowed” by external forces, while a united nation, even one with limited resources, could successfully resist aggression.
The Adwa Precedent: Unity as the Ultimate Guarantor of Sovereignty
History offers a profound and inspiring lesson for nations facing such fragmentation: the Battle of Adwa in 1896. The Ethiopian Empire, facing an existential threat from Italian colonial ambitions, was at the time a patchwork of rival regional powers, deeply divided by ethnic loyalties, religious disputes, and political competition.
However, the looming threat of colonization catalyzed a historic transformation. Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul recognized that a divided nation would inevitably fall. They successfully rallied diverse and often antagonistic factions—from the northern highlands to the southern plains—under a single, unifying banner of national survival. The victory at Adwa was secured not just through military strategy, but through the psychological and political triumph of unity over fragmentation. This victory preserved Ethiopia’s sovereignty, making it the only African nation to successfully repel European colonization during the “Scramble for Africa,” and inspired anti-colonial movements across the entire continent.
The core lesson of Adwa is this: “The victory at Adwa was not merely a military triumph; it was a symbolic reaffirmation that the collective will of a united people is the ultimate guarantor of sovereignty.”
The Imperative for Somali National Unity
Somalia cannot effectively confront its external challenges while its internal house is divided. The challenges of today require the spirit of Adwa—a commitment to national survival that transcends all temporary political disputes.
A Direct Appeal to Leadership:
Prioritize National Survival: Political leaders across all spectrums—in the Federal Government, Federal Member States, and Opposition Alliances—must recognize that their individual, regional, or factional interests are inextricably linked to the survival of the Somali state. The preservation of the nation must supersede all other political objectives.
Transcending Fragmentation: Just as the leaders at Adwa set aside deep-seated rivalries, Somali leaders must find the political courage to reach a consensus on the constitutional and electoral issues that currently divide them. This requires a national dialogue grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment to the nation’s future.
Form a Unified Diplomatic Front: A fragmented nation is easily dismissed. A united Somalia, speaking with one authoritative voice, is far more capable of mobilizing international support, defending its legal rights under international law, and resisting any form of aggression. The United Nations and the international community can only be expected to resist external aggression when the nation itself presents a unified, resolute front.
Key Quotes for National Mobilization
To underscore the gravity and the necessity of this appeal, we highlight the following principles: “A fragmented nation could easily be swallowed; a united nation can resist any aggression. “The preservation of Somalia’s sovereignty depends on the ability of its people and leaders to recognize that their shared identity and future are far more significant than the temporary political disputes of the present.”
“The ongoing friction is not a political debate; it is a vulnerability being actively exploited. Unity is not an option; it is the only strategic asset we possess.”
Conclusion: A Call for National Renewal
Now is the time for a national renewal—a commitment to a unified, sovereign, and resilient Somalia. Let the enduring lesson of Adwa serve as our guide: that the strength of a nation is measured by the unity of its people. We urge all political and public figures to put aside political differences, embrace the spirit of national resilience, and place Sovereignty First.
The future of the Federal Republic of Somalia depends on the collective will to unite and defend the integrity of the state.
