Nomad Diaries Facilitates Cross Cultural understanding

Nomad Diaries is a novel that emanates passionately the horrors, hardships, adjustments, and joys faced by a Somali refugee family. It dives deep under the surface and poignantly illustrates the journey of Nadifo’s family and is literally an emotional roller coaster, not unlike the events which lead to fleeing one’s homeland and the adjustment to a new land by a refugee. Reading this book will help facilitate cross-cultural understanding.

The brutality of the Somali Civil War is symbolized by the tragic rape of 14-year-old Henna. However, her treatment as an outcast from the family during her pregnancy is difficult to grasp. She is treated as though she is to blame for the rape and the value of purity is conveyed in the harshest of contexts.

This novel debunks the unfortunately common misconception that all refugees have lived humble lives, which is demonstrated by the resettlement manager who explained how to turn the stove on and off. Nadifo and her family’s former elitist life of luxury illustrates the various backgrounds that refugees bring to the United States.

Another cultural epiphany is the conflict that arises when Haybe wants to marry Ceebla, who is from a different tribe. However, their eventual marriage illustrates the acceptance of blending that the United States has also been slow to acknowledge.

The transformation of Nadifo provides a sense of beauty and serenity within the adversity that the family endures and illustrates the strength of the human spirit. Her friendship
and business partnership with her former nemesis, Miss Gayle,
indicates how similar humans truly are, once we delve beneath our surface differences.

Yasmeen’s clarity and uncensored approach makesNomad Diariesa delight to read.
