This article is a follow-up of WardheerNews's recent posted article commenting on the newly discovered unpublished manuscript 1978 edition of “Maansadii Timacadde”(Timacadde Poetry) collected by Boobe Yusuf Duale and Salah Jama Hussein. Wardheer News quite skillfully compared “Maansadii Timacadde”, 1978 edition with the widely available “Maansadii Timacadde”(Timacadde Poetry), 1983 edition. Boobe, in the later edition of the book, removed Salah Jama Hussein,s name as the co-author and published it as the sole author. Carefully analyzing and comparing the two identical books, in my opinion, Wardheer News adroitly has shown that Boobe deliberately committed an extreme act of academic dishonesty and crass betrayal of personal friendship.
Altering the plural forms, presented in both the acknowledgment and preface of the 1978 edition, to singular formats in 1983 edition, to conceal the removal of co-author’s name and strengthen his claim of sole authorship, as discussed in WardheerNews’s article, Boobe perpetrated the gravest intellectual dishonesty in Somali history. This extreme intellectual dishonesty and misconduct has sparked a hot debate among Somali intellectuals; as a result, the authenticity of Boobe’s other publications, the truthfulness of his viewpoints, and the validity of his speeches are all in doubt today. Salah Jama Hussein’s statement, in WardheerNews’s article, narrating how he and Boobe started the collection of Timacadde’s poetry is a strong indicator of the authenticity of Salah’s co-authorship of the 1978 edition of “Maansadii Timacadde”(Timacadde Poetry). This stark exposure demands Boobe to come out from the shadows and abandon his false claim of solely collecting Timacadde’s poetry and restore Salah’s rightful authorship role. Now, Boobe is certainly on the verge of losing his personal and intellectual integrity unless he publicly apologizes for this professional and academic misconduct. Because of his silence and avoidance to answer questions about Salah’s removed authorship role, Boobe already appears as a plagiarist that even lacks the courage to discuss about this grave academic fraud. Boobe currently works as a program coordinator for Somaliland Academy for Peace and Development (SAPD), which is funded by International Peace-building Alliance - Interpeace. Somaliland National Youth Organization (SONYO) extended an honor of appreciation to Boobe Yusuf Duale on January, 2010, in an event held in Mansoor hotel. Somaliland Academy for Peace and Development (SAPD), afterward, celebrated SONYA's recognition for its program coordinator's effort. SAPD also published "The role of the Media in Political Reconstruction,” in 2002, which Boobe was a principal Researcher. In this SAPD publication, Boobe compares his publication of "Timacade's Poetry", still not acknowledging Salah as a co-author, to that of "Diiwaankii Sayidka" collected by Aw Jama Omar. As a result of this grave academic dishonesty, it is now the time for SAPD to start avoiding being used as a promoter of intellectual theft. Like every prestigious organization, Academy for Peace and Development (SAPD) should demand Boobe not to use its name for the promotion, distribution and publication of “Timacadde’s Poetry" book. In the meantime Boobe should do the right thing by stepping forward and publicly apologizing to Salah Jama Hussein. It is also fair and appropriate that Boobe should belatedly compensate Salah for his share of any proceeds generated from the sales and royalties of the book. Finally, I would implore on Somalis not to take the new culture of intellectual thefts like the frequent traditional camel rustling in which, right or wrong, everyone used to stand by his own clan.
