A New Puntland, a New Page

On hearing the news of prophet Muhammad’s death (peace be upon him) the Muslims were shocked. Omar Bin Khattab was so upset that he threatened to cut off the head of any who said the prophet was dead. However, cool and collected as was his habit Abu Bakr As Siddique soon defused the situation.
“O People!” He said as he faced the companions, “If Muhammad is the sole object of your adoration, then know that he is dead. But if it is Allah (The One God) you Worshiped, then know that He does not die.”
He then recited (what means): “Muhammad is no more than an apostle: many Were the apostle that passed away before him. If he died or were slain, will ye then Turn back on your heels? If any did turn back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah. but Allah (on the other hand) will swiftly reward those who (serve Him) with gratitude.” (Quran: 3: 114)
Approximately five and half months ago I wrote an article outlining the significance of choosing the right leadership. At the time I had in mind a candidate I had recently become acquainted with and whose vision I personally felt had something to offer Puntland. To me this candidate seemed to have all the credentials and leadership qualities that were needed to usher Puntland into a new chapter of enlightenment and strength. Moreover, he was a fresh face and was obviously someone who had vote of confidence from Puntlanders across the kin divide.
Man plans but Allah is the best Planner, Puntland has today a new President, and not the one I envisaged. And this could only happen by the will of Allah for He alone knows the Unseen. This in no way depreciates the abilities and the qualities of our new Leadership whom I have only become acquainted with on election day, January 8th, 2009.
From what I have seen and heard thus far, I must confess, my initial disappointment has already given way to hope and anticipation. The elections were open and fair, and this in itself is a triumph and good news for the people of Puntland.
January 8th, 2009, was a remarkable day for Puntland. My congratulations to all the co-contestants, indeed, what they missed out in terms of positions, they gained in our respect and admiration. These are men who dared to dream and worked hard to walk the walk; many of them leaving behind their families and easy living in the Diaspora.
By graciously accepting the outcome, they have departed from the hitherto trodden path of disloyalty and disruptive behavior, and shown us all what it means to be honorable citizens. We pray that they will continue to dream for Puntland and hope they will stay on to serve the
ir nation. They already are role models for hundreds and thousands of Puntlanders.
Not least, Mr. Saleeban Cise’s remarkable interview and Gen. Abdillahi Ahmed’s courageous speeches are a reflection of Puntland’s coming of age. I concur their positive message of good will and hope and welcome with open arms and warm wishes our new President, Mudane Dr. Abdirahman Muhammed and his Vice AbdiSamad Ali Shire. May Allah be with them in all of their affairs.
